Take the Mazda Skyactive engine. It is running around 13:1 compression ratio on 87 octane fuel without detonation. They contribute part of that to the fact they control combustion chamber temps better. The hottest part of a combustion chamber is near the exhaust ports, when fuel is injected there it cools the cylinder better. If fuel is partially injected early not only does it atomize better, but it flashes (instantly evaporates through enthalpy) and creates a vacuum for better air intake.
